A little shoulder love can save you a world of hurt.
If you have managed to get to Geezer status, whatever age that means to you, you probably need to consider your shoulders before embarking on a major climbing or back packing adventure. For hiking, perhaps not so much, but I find carrying a pack can often aggravate some old injuries, and climbing…well, that is how I got some of them.
This list of exercises is a good basis for you to keep the shoulders in one piece and minimize some of the pain you may feel. As always, start slowly. If you are not on a regular program, go light, go easy and feel it out. Start now, so by Spring / Summer you have the strength you need. Nothing works if you start the week before you go out.
